Maritime Kent
Frederick Nash (1782-1856), 'Rochester Cathedral and Castle',
Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection

The project will produce a freely accessible and searchable database of Kent's ships and maritime communities. The database will incorporate a large body of quantitative data garnered from the sources linked with Kent's maritime past and allow us to investigate the merchant fleet of Kent and enable us to reconstruct the socio-economic lives of Kent's traders and shippers. It will subsequently form the basis for the project website. The data on ship-voyages will be mapped so that we can visually display Kent's trading reach over the timeframe covered by this project. We will provide more information on the database and voyage-mapping as the project progresses.
