This is the website for two innovative projects based at the University of Southampton. Merchant Shipping, Trade, and Maritime Communities is a project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and will transform our understanding of England's maritime past. Maritime Kent will reconstruct Kent's seaborne trade and examines the county's coastal communities. Both projects will produce free to access searchable databases of ships, seafarers, and merchants, and visually map English maritime trade routes over the period c.1565-c.1765.
