Armada Study Day August 2025
A study day, in collaboration with the University of Southampton and informed by their project, ‘English Merchant Shipping, Trade, and Maritime Communities: From the Spanish Armada to the Seven Years War’.
In August, researchers and historians from England and Spain explored the historical background to the events of 1588. Topics included Hampshire Under the threat of War; Southampton & Spain & Creative Response, Pageants, Film & Novel. The day ended with a screening of the film The Armada Chronicle, set in Southampton in 1588, which is now free to watch on this website. The University of Southampton also created an exhibition, and attendees received a copy of the novel “The Theatre of the World”, set in the turbulent times of Elizabethan Southampton.
Southampton Walking Tours
Thanks to our friends and project partners at the Sarah Siddons Fan Club Theatre Group – and to Dr Cheryl Butler, in particular – for producing three wonderful guided walks of our hometown. The walks relate the major themes explored in the project – trade, empire, shipping and maritime communities – to the physical geography and built heritage of Southampton. Each walk covers approximately one hundred years of history, and their respective routes take about ninety minutes to cover.
You can download the leaflets – in either standard or mobile-friendly format – here:
